MASTER THE MOMENT YOU'RE IN

Some founders think in days. Others think in decades. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, but knowing your natural time horizon makes a difference.

Your relationship with time shapes how you lead. It’s not just about planning ahead. It’s about where you instinctively focus your energy, and if that focus doesn’t align with the stage your company is in, you’re going to struggle with setting priorities and making the right calls.

This isn’t just theory. It’s one of the most practical ways to stay in sync with your company. When your time horizon matches what your company actually needs, you gain clarity, you communicate better, and you make better decisions.

Founders who know their natural time horizon and how to align it with the moment their company is in don’t force themselves into a different gear. Instead, they surround themselves with people who balance their instincts and build systems that stretch their perspective.

What time span are you leading from? And is it the one your company needs right now?

MARK MY WORDS

I’ve always been wired to think far into the future. But in Ninety’s early days, that instinct wasn’t always helpful. We didn’t need to think in five- or ten-year visions. We needed real-time solutions.

I had to train myself to lead in the present. That didn’t mean abandoning the long view. It meant making it useful to the moment we were in.

As founders, we don’t need to change how we think. But we do need to stay aware. When your natural time horizon doesn’t match what the company needs, it becomes harder to keep moving forward and make real progress.

The answer isn’t to stretch yourself thin. It’s to build a team that fills the gaps and to practice showing up fully where you are. That’s how you grow into the future without losing the now.

You’ll hear:

  • Why ambiguity strains teams more than you expect
  • What “succeed or escalate” looks like in real life
  • Why ownership and meeting size matter more as you scale
