Set the Rules Before Using AI

Ninety is celebrating 10 years this year, and I’ve been here for more than 8 of them, serving in multiple Seats along the way. I’ve seen our technology evolve during that time, including the work that eventually brought AI into Ninety.

Mark Abbott, Ninety’s founder, has talked about AI being part of our future for years. Now that more companies everywhere are using AI in their day-to-day work, leaders have another responsibility to think through: What company information should these tools be allowed to access?

Think of how your team might be using AI. Someone pastes in a customer conversation, uploads a financial file, or shares an internal plan because they naturally think the tool will give them a better answer with more context, and they’re right. It probably can.

But before your team trusts an AI tool with your company information, there are three questions you need to ask: Does the provider use your data to train public models? Has its security been independently reviewed? Does the tool respect the permissions your company already uses?

If you can’t get a straight answer to those three questions, your team should question whether or not they’re using the right tools.
