Accountability Isn’t always on You
We’re halfway through January. You’ve probably already run your planning sessions, set priorities, and walked away feeling clear about who owns what. And yet, if you’re honest, some of it still feels like it is on you.
When coaching clients, I often hear some version of: “I don’t want to micromanage, but if I don’t stay on top of it, nothing moves forward.”
My response is people want to be accountable not held accountable. EOS is a system of accountability. That tension usually shows up when ownership isn’t clear, and the only way to see progress is to chase it down yourself. That’s why so many leaders stay close, step in more than they want to, and slowly take on work that was never meant to sit with them in the first place.
Too often, accountability shifts back to the leader, not because they want control, but because the system they’re running isn’t built to carry accountability on its own.
If execution feels like it’s dependent on you, it’s time to step back, reevaluate, and reset how you work so accountability lives with your team, not you.
